Acupuncture for Migraines

Acupuncture for Migraines:

Individuals who suffer migraine or frequent headaches are increasingly turning to Acupuncture for Migraines. There is a growing body of research to support the use of Acupuncture for Migraines. Evidence shows it is effective at reducing the frequency and severity of migraines and headaches. At Flawless Physio, we use Acupuncture in conjunction with other physiotherapeutic treatments. It can reduce your muscle tension and increase joint mobility around your head, neck, and upper back. This can have positive effects on your migraine and headache symptoms.

How effective is Acupuncture for Migraines?

Western medicine has proven theories for the benefits of acupuncture for your migraine and headache symptoms. Your body releases its own natural pain-relieving chemicals, such as endorphins when stimulated by the acupuncture needles. These chemicals have been shown to increase during and following your acupuncture treatment. In this study on Acupuncture for Migraines, 4 weeks of Acupuncture was shown to significantly reduce the recurrence of migraines over a 20 week period.

Medication vs Acupuncture?

Currently, the majority of people who suffer from migraines and headaches use medication to reduce symptoms. This has varying degrees of effect in relieving acute symptoms such as pain and nausea. Medications while effective do have side effects. Some can be quite significant including making you feel constipation, nausea, and even have a risk of addiction. In the most severe cases, these effects can lead to death. Although all medication sold in the UK has passed rigorous medical research. These severe side effects are deemed adequately infrequent for the medication to reach the user.

There are very limited treatments available to prevent or reduce the frequency or severity of episodes. Acupuncture is a great option for this. Acupuncture for migraine and other symptoms does have side effects also. The most common are minor, such as bruising or bleeding on withdrawal of the needle, drowsiness, and increase of symptoms for up to 48 hours. Often if your symptoms are increased directly after treatment it is followed by very good outcomes in the 48-72 hour period that follows. The more severe reported side effects of acupuncture have all been linked to improper technique by inadequately trained practitioners. This can be avoided with appropriate training and single-use sterile needles.
