What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is nerve pain, an injury or irritation to the sciatic nerve that originates in your buttock/ gluteal area. There are five sciatica nerve roots; two are from the lower back region, and the other three are from the final section of the spine called the sacrum. They run through the hips, buttocks and down the leg, ending just below the knee.
People usually describe sciatic pain in different ways, such as sharp, shooting, burning, electric or stabbing, depending on the nerve’s level of irritation.
The onset of sciatica pain can appear either suddenly or gradually. A disc herniation is common and shows sudden pain. Arthritis in the spine develops slowly over time.
The causes of sciatic nerve pain can include degenerative disc disease, lumbar spinal stenosis, Spondylolisthesis (a spinal condition where vertebrae can slip over one another), pregnancy and muscles spasm in the body’s trunk.
The symptoms of Sciatica are the following:
- Moderate to severe pain in the lower back, buttock and leg.
- Numbness or weakness in your lower back, buttock, leg or feet.
- Pain that worsens with movement.
- Pins and needles in your legs, toes and feet.
- Loss of bowel and bladder control
How can Sports Massage help Sciatica?
Sports Massage for Sciatica helps to soothe and loosen tight muscles in your lower back and core, which form painful adhesions and knots. Soft tissue release and myofascial release are conducted on the buttocks, back of thighs and calves significantly to ease the nerve sensation of pain. They stimulate and put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
Massage stimulates specific receptors in the brain, and as a result, the brain releases the endorphin hormone. The endorphins tell the body to reduce the level of cortisol. Cortisol elevates stress hormones in the body, and when it reduces, it leads to the stress level dropping in your body. After a sports massage, your muscles feel relieved and relaxed, reducing the body’s perception of pain.
To get maximum results, we recommend patients have regular massages to restore new muscle memory in their muscles.
