Hallux Rigidus is a condition that causes arthritis of the big toe joint, leading to a reduced range of motion and pain with activity. It can be an extremely debilitating condition, and shoes play a key role in the management of symptoms.

This article will provide our Foot and Ankle Specialists’ recommendations for the best Shoes for Hallux Rigidus. We have purchased all these shoes for testing and taken our own photos and videos to provide genuine recommendations as experts in this condition.

Best Shoes for Hallux Rigidus

Hoka Bondi 8

The first shoe we recommend is the Hoka Bondi 8 due to its 4mm heel drop, thick midsole cushioning and forefoot rocker.

The thick cushioning in the midsole of the Bondi 8 consists of compression-moulded EVA, which is super lightweight. All of this cushioning helps to absorb the impact and vibration when you walk or run to reduce the irritation on the big toe joint.

The Bondi 8 has a wider base than its older model to provide a stable platform alongside a bevelled heel and forefoot rocker. The forefoot rocker is a critical element that reduces forefoot pressure and the extension of the big toe joint.

If you are looking for a cushioned trainer to offload your big toe, we recommend the Hoka Bondi 8.

Asics Glideride 3

The Glideride 3 is an excellent shoe for pain relief from Hallux Rigidus due to its 5mm heel drop, aggressive forefoot rocker and FF Blast+ Foam.

Although this is a neutral trainer, the edges of the sole unit are slightly raised to provide additional stability. The outer aspect of the sole contains FF Balast+ cushioning that is normally found the the Asics Gel-Cumulus to provide a softer landing but is more responsive than spongey.

The Glideride has an aggressive forefoot rocker that almost feels like it is tipping you forward during the push-off of each step. This plays a significant role in offloading the big toe joint and reducing pain levels.

The Glideride is less cushioned than the Bondi 8 but contains a more aggressive forefoot rocker.

Hoka Carbon X 3

The Carbon X 3 is one of our favourite shoes on the market for Hallux Rigidus. It contains a 4mm heel drop, forefoot rocker, and carbon plate and doesn’t cost the crazy prices of other carbon-plated shoes.

The cushioned midsole is designed for long-distance running but can be equally used for long-distance walking. It is the lightest of the 3 shoes that we have recommended.

The carbon plate reduces the amount of forefoot extension available, and combined with the forefoot rocker, it offloads the big toe joint and is the shoe our patients have had the most success with for pain relief.

This is the most expensive of the 3 shoes, but most patients find it worth the expense.
