Ankle pain can be from many different causes, a sports injury, a chronic condition such as arthritis or systemic conditions such as lymphedema. For many of these causes, massage can be a helpful treatment to reduce pain and swelling, and improve function.

Massage for Ankle Sprain

Massage after acute injuries such as a ligament sprain of the ankle can be an effective treatment to reduce pain and swelling. In the very early days after an injury, massage may be contraindicated until a diagnosis has been made and pathologies that could be worsened by massage have been ruled out, such as fractures.

Once a diagnosis has been made, and it is an appropriate time to use massage therapy, it can be used to reduce the swelling that can be persistent at an ankle due to its low position on our body and the effect of gravity. Clearing old swelling and improving blood circulation with massage can reduce pain and increase joint mobility, two common issues after an ankle sprain.

Massage for Ankle Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joints of the body, it can be caused by wear and tear, injury or systemic illness. Muscles around the affected joints often tighten, and this can worsen the pain. Relaxing the muscles with massage can be an effective treatment to reduce pain. Swelling is a prominent symptom of arthritis, and this can make the joint feel stiff and reduce the range of motion. Massage can help the body to drain the swelling away from the joint to improve mobility and reduce the feeling of stiffness.

Massage for Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a common issue, with nearly half a million people in the UK suffering from it. It causes excessive fluid retention or swelling to the limbs, most commonly the legs. Massage in the form of lymphatic drainage is a helpful form of treatment for draining the excessive swelling and consequentially reducing the symptoms, which include pain, stiff and heavy legs, and risk of infection.
