What are Sports Orthotics?
Sports orthotics are shoe inserts that are designed to be semi-rigid and to influence gait patterns when playing sport. They are generally thicker than a shoe orthotic so that they can tolerate high forces that go through the feet when moving at speed.
Sports orthotics at Flawless Orthotics are custom made to fit the contours of your feet, providing comfort and enhancing the biomechanics of your lower limbs to reduce injury risk and resolve conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, and Runner’s knee.
Sports Custom Orthotics
These are different from off-the-shelf insoles as they are specifically designed to help each foot and specific biomechanical issues rather than sports insoles that are ready-made that just offer general support.
To design a Sports Custom Orthotics, a biomechanical assessment is required. This is carried out by a foot specialist and entails a clinical interview, assessment for mobility and strength, a 3D Foot scan, and a dynamic foot scan. The clinician will usually carry out a slow-motion video analysis of your running gait.
Custom Sports Orthotics take 2 weeks to get made and usually last for up to 5 years.
Sports Orthotics for Running
We are a running specialist clinic and we can design custom sports orthotics for running following a running gait analysis and biomechanical assessment. We look at objective measures such as your cadence, speed, the force of pronation moments, and gait patterns such as over-stride and scissoring. This helps us decide the level of support your sports orthotics require. Once you receive your sports orthotics, you can simply remove the inner sole from your trainer and replace them with your new custom sports orthotics for running.
Sports Orthotics for Overpronation
Overpronation is a common movement pattern through the gait cycle that we see in our clients. It is not necessarily a bad movement pattern but it can be risk factor for certain conditions. When moving at speed, pronation forces can be increased and if an individual has poor foot control, overpronation can be more prominent during sport. This can lead to common conditions such as ITB Syndrome, runner’s knee and shin splints
Sports Orthotics don’t stop overpronation as this is a natural movement of the foot but they can help to reduce and control the pronation moment of your feet, reducing the risk of injuries and alleviating pain.
Sports Orthotics for Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common types of foot pain. It is associated with pain on the underside of the heel and along the arch of the foot. It is prominent in people with flat feet and can be caused by a sudden increase in activity levels or biomechanical overload of the foot.
Overload is more common during sports and our custom orthotics can reduce the force going through the plantar fascia when running or playing sport. This helps to reduce pain levels and when combined with a thorough rehabilitation program, they can resolve plantar fasciitis.
